〜はおろか

'Not to mention X — even Y'. A is the obvious case and B, the easier or smaller thing, is also impossible or true. Formal written style; the second clause usually takes も and a negative.

「Aは言うまでもなく、Bさえも」と程度を強調する書き言葉。

Formation: N + はおろか + N + も／さえ（多く否定文）

Example sentences

  1. 漢字はおろか、ひらがなも読めなかった。

    かんじはおろか、ひらがなもよめなかった。

    Let alone kanji, I couldn't even read hiragana.

  2. 彼は海外旅行はおろか、県外に出たこともない。

    かれはかいがいりょこうはおろか、けんがいにでたこともない。

    Forget overseas travel — he has never even left the prefecture.

  3. 忙しくて、休憩はおろか昼食をとる暇もない。

    いそがしくて、きゅうけいはおろかちゅうしょくをとるひまもない。

    I'm so busy I have no time for lunch, let alone a break.
