〜（よ）うか〜まいか

"Whether to do X or not." Expresses wavering between doing something and not doing it. Slightly formal; common in narration and considered speech.

「するかしないか」と迷う気持ちを表すやや硬い表現。

Formation: V-(よ)う + か + V-dict + まいか（する → するまい／しまい／すまい）

Example sentences

  1. 転職しようかしまいか迷っている。

    てんしょくしようかしまいかまよっている。

    I'm torn over whether or not to change jobs.

  2. 会議に参加しようかするまいか、まだ決めていない。

    かいぎにさんかしようかするまいか、まだきめていない。

    I still haven't decided whether to attend the meeting or not.

  3. 本当のことを言おうか言うまいか悩んだ。

    ほんとうのことをいおうかいうまいかなやんだ。
