Aoyama Cemetery

青山霊園 あおやまれいえん

Tokyo's grandest cemetery, a hillside of Meiji statesmen, foreign teachers and a cherry avenue the city walks in April.

For a second visitQuiet · History · Seasonal · Free · Nature

Opened in 1874 as Japan's first public cemetery, Aoyama holds the founders of modern Japan — prime ministers, generals, the novelist Shiga Naoya, the loyal dog Hachiko's owner — and, in the foreigners' section, the Western engineers and teachers the Meiji government hired. Its central avenue is lined with old cherry trees and is, quietly, one of the best hanami walks in the city, with none of the crowds of Ueno. The gravestones are a lesson in Japanese design; the paths between them are where Aoyama walks its dogs and eats its lunch. It is entirely free and open all hours.
