Mori Art Museum and Tokyo City View
森美術館と東京シティビュー もりびじゅつかんととうきょうしてぃびゅー
Contemporary art on the 53rd floor, a 360-degree view on the 52nd, and an open-air roof above them both.
EssentialArt · View · Late night · Modern · High-end · Rainy day
The museum at the top of Roppongi Hills shows big, international contemporary exhibitions — Asian artists especially — and stays open until ten at night, which no other major museum in Tokyo does. One ticket includes Tokyo City View, the glass-walled observation floor below it, and for a supplement the Sky Deck, a helipad-turned-roof at 270 metres with nothing between you and the sky. Come at half past four in winter: the exhibition first, then the view as the sun sets behind Fuji and the city lights come on beneath the Tower.
Don't miss
- The Sky Deck at sunset, open-air, with the Tower and Fuji in one frame
- Exhibitions that stay open until 10 pm — the only serious art in Tokyo after dinner
- Louise Bourgeois' spider "Maman" on the plaza below, free
- Tip
- The Sky Deck closes in wind or rain; check the sign at the ticket desk before you pay the supplement.
- Best time
- An hour before sunset, any clear day; Tuesdays are shorter hours.
