Meiji Jingu Gaien ginkgo avenue
明治神宮外苑いちょう並木 めいじじんぐうがいえんいちょうなみき
Three hundred metres of ginkgo trees pruned into cones, gold for three weeks in late November.
Worth itSeasonal · Nature · Free · Photogenic · Walkable
The four rows of ginkgo were planted in 1923 to frame the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery at the end of the avenue, and they are pruned every year into tall cones that get shorter towards the gallery to exaggerate the perspective. From the third week of November they turn, and for three weeks the avenue is gold overhead and gold underfoot, with a festival of food stalls. The rest of the year it is a green avenue of cafés with the stadiums of the Olympic park behind it. The gallery at the end shows eighty enormous paintings of the Meiji emperor's life.
