The Kiyosumi-Shirakawa roasters

清澄白河の焙煎所 きよすみしらかわのばいせんじょ

Where third-wave coffee reached Japan — Blue Bottle's first roastery, Arise, Allpress in a timber warehouse — on streets of low workshops and canals.

Blue Bottle opened its first Japanese roastery in a Kiyosumi warehouse in 2015 because the ceilings were high and the rent was low, and a dozen roasters followed: Arise, All Press in a timber lumber warehouse, Fukadaso in a converted apartment building, Koffee Mameya's flagship. The district was warehouses on canals and still is — low, wide, quiet — with small galleries, a knife-maker, and the Fukagawa Edo Museum's reconstructed street. Sunday morning here is the calmest in the city: coffee, the garden, the museum, coffee again.
