Toyosu Market and the tuna auction

豊洲市場とマグロの競り とよすしじょうとまぐろのせり

The world's largest fish market behind glass — tuna auctioned at dawn, sushi counters upstairs, and a rooftop lawn on the bay.

The market that replaced Tsukiji is a set of sealed, temperature-controlled halls on reclaimed land, and it was designed to be watched: a glass gallery runs above the tuna floor where, from about half past five, frozen tuna the size of men are auctioned in a chant that lasts seconds each. A small lower gallery with a closer view takes bookings by lottery. The restaurant floors hold the sushi shops that moved from Tsukiji — Daiwa, Sushi Dai — with their queues; the rooftop is a lawn over the bay. Next door is the Senkyaku Banrai complex of shops, and the hot-spring bathhouse with an outdoor bath facing the water.
