Ueno Park and Shinobazu Pond
上野公園と不忍池 うえのこうえんとしのばずのいけ
Japan's first public park — the cherry avenue, the lotus pond, a Toshogu shrine in gold, and a zoo.
EssentialNature · Free · Seasonal · With children · History
The hill was the temple estate of Kaneiji, the Tokugawa family temple, until it burned in the 1868 battle that ended the shogunate; the government made the ruins a park in 1873, the first in Japan. The cherry avenue down the middle holds a thousand trees and, in the first week of April, the loudest hanami in Tokyo, with blue tarpaulins and office parties from dawn. Shinobazu Pond below is a lotus field in July and August. The Toshogu shrine of 1651, gilded and carved, survived every fire; the zoo has the pandas and a five-storey pagoda inside its fence.
Don't miss
- The cherry avenue at first light in early April, before the parties
- Toshogu's gold gate and the copper lanterns given by daimyo
- Lotus flowers opening on Shinobazu Pond at dawn in late July
- Tip
- The park's museums each close one day a week, usually Monday; plan the park for Monday and the museums for the rest.
- Best time
- Early April for blossom; late July mornings for lotus; any autumn afternoon.
