Daikanyama's low-rise streets
代官山の低層の街 だいかんやまのていそうのまち
Hillside Terrace, the Danish embassy's bricks, designers' own shops and the old Asakura house — a village Fumihiko Maki built over thirty years.
Worth itArchitecture · Quiet · Shopping · Walkable · History
Daikanyama is the one district in Tokyo that was designed: from 1969 to 1992 the architect Fumihiko Maki built Hillside Terrace along Kyu-Yamate-dori in stages, low white buildings around courtyards that set the scale for everything after. Between them are the shops of Japanese designers who chose not to be on Omotesando, a Scandinavian furniture showroom, coffee, and the Kyu Asakura House, a 1919 wooden merchant's residence with a hillside garden, open to visitors and almost always empty. Log Road, on an old railway cutting, has a brewery and a garden. It is small, and it is best on a weekday.
Don't miss

- A Danish pastry from the embassy-side bakery, eaten on the terrace steps
