Yoyogi Park

代々木公園 よよぎこうえん

Tokyo's Sunday lawn — rockabilly dancers, drum circles, picnics under the ginkgo, and the Olympic gymnasium by Tange.

The 1964 Olympic village became a park in 1967, and it is the opposite of the shrine forest next door: open lawns, a fountain, cyclists, and on Sundays the whole city at play — the rockabilly dancers by the entrance who have been there since the 1980s, drummers, tightrope walkers, dog owners, and picnics that go on until dark. On the far side stands Kenzo Tange's National Gymnasium, two swooping suspension roofs of 1964 that remain the most beautiful modern buildings in Tokyo. In late November the ginkgo avenue at the north end goes gold.
