Tsukiji Outer Market
築地場外市場 つきじじょうがいしじょう
Four hundred shops that fed the fish market and stayed when it left — the best breakfast in Tokyo, eaten standing at seven.
EssentialFood · Early morning · Shopping · Local life · Craft
When the wholesale market moved to Toyosu in 2018, the streets around it kept everything visitors had come for: the knife shops, the tamagoyaki stands, the dried-fish and seaweed merchants, the tea shops, the sushi counters, and the culture of eating at seven in the morning among people who have been up since three. Go early, eat in three or four places rather than one — a slice of sweet omelette on a stick, a bowl of uni and ikura, grilled scallop from a grill on the pavement — and buy knives and dried bonito for home. It is at its best on a weekday; by ten on Saturday it is a queue.
Don't miss
- A tamagoyaki on a stick from Yamachou or Marutake, still warm
- Tsukiji Masamoto or Aritsugu for a knife chosen by the person who sharpened it
- A bowl of whatever the fishmonger says is best today, at a counter with six stools
- Tip
- Arrive at seven, cash in hand, and do not sit down anywhere until you have walked the whole grid once.
- Best time
- 7–9 am on a weekday; many shops close on Sundays and Wednesdays.
