Hama-rikyu Gardens
浜離宮恩賜庭園 はまりきゅうおんしていえん
A shogun's duck-hunting garden with a tidal pond, ringed by the towers of Shiodome.
EssentialNature · Quiet · Seasonal · View · History
The Tokugawa shoguns' villa on the bay, where they hunted duck and received guests; the pond is the last in Tokyo filled by the tide, so the water level and the fish change with the sea. A tea house stands on an island in the middle, reached by long wooden bridges, and serves matcha and a sweet to anyone who takes off their shoes. The three-hundred-year-old pine near the entrance was planted by the sixth shogun. Around it all, the glass towers of Shiodome make the view the most Tokyo of any garden.
